Drive-Thru, Prevent Flu

Summer is hardly gone, yet the signs announcing flu shots can be seen everywhere.   What is flu?  Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness.  Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or death.  Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications.  The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) vaccine experts recommend that everyone 6 months and older get an annual flu vaccine.  It takes about two weeks after vaccination for your body to develop an immune response so get vaccinated early and be protected all season long!!

In addition to getting vaccinated, you can take every day preventative action like staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs.   If you are sick with the flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading flu to others.

The Cambridge-Guernsey County Health Department will be holding two “Drive-Thru Flu Shot Clinics” again this year to assist area residents in preventing the flu.  The first drive-thru clinic will be held Sunday, September 27th from 10:00am – 3:00pm at Meadowbrook Middle School, just southwest of Byesville on State Route 821.  The second drive-thru clinic will be held Sunday, October 4th from 10:00am – 3:00pm at the East Guernsey Schools’ campus on Wintergreen Rd in Old Washington.  For the 2016-2017 flu season, the CDC recommends use of the flu shot, the nasal spray flu vaccine will not be given during the Health Department clinics.

The Health Department has successfully been holding drive-thru flu clinics since 2007.  Drive-thru participants and their passengers pass through a registration area first and then receive their 2016-2017 flu vaccine – all from the comfort of their cars!  The drive-thru clinic allows the Health Department the opportunity to practice its state of preparedness in the event of a disaster in which there would be a need to vaccinate residents of the county in a timely fashion.

Medicare and Medicaid payment will be accepted for flu vaccination of adults, as well as cash and check.  Medicare and Medicaid cards MUST BE PRESENTED at the time of service.  Flu vaccine is available to adults without Medicare or Medicaid at a cost of $20.  The Ohio Department of Health supplies flu vaccine for children under age 19 through the Vaccines for Children program.  A donation of $10 per vaccine administration fee is appreciated.  No child will be denied vaccine due to inability to pay.
